how many hours of wedding photography

How Much Wedding Photography Coverage Do You Really Need?

One of the biggest questions couples have is how many hours of wedding photography they actually need. The answer depends on your day, not a generic package.

Full Day Wedding Coverage

Full day coverage allows your story to unfold naturally. From getting ready moments to dancing with your favorite people, nothing feels rushed or forced. Full day coverage for a wedding that is happening all in one location will look different than full day coverage for a wedding with a church ceremony. Another factor in how much time is needed is whether you are doing a first look and if you and your partner want to attend all of cocktail hour. This can easily range from 8 to 11 hours.

Here is a sample timeline of a wedding with the ceremony and reception at the same location, a first look, and all formal photos completed before the ceremony so you can be present during cocktail hour. This day would require 8.5 hours of wedding photography coverage. This day could add more coverage if there is a private last dance or special exit you would like photographed.

12:00 Wedding photography coverage begins with detail photos
12:45 Couple gets dressed
1:15 First look followed by couples portraits
2:15 Wedding party photos
2:45 Family photos
3:15 Couple tucks away while guests arrive
4:00 Ceremony
4:30 Cocktail hour
5:30 Intros, dances, speeches
6:00 Dinner
7:00 Cake cutting followed by open dancing
8:30 Photography coverage ends

Partial Day Coverage

Shorter coverage often leads to stress, tight timelines, and missed moments. When photography is built into the flow of your day, everything feels easier. Shorter coverage can work well for smaller weddings with fewer than 50 people, no wedding party, small families, no first look, and if you are willing to spend cocktail hour taking photos. Partial day coverage typically ranges from 2 to 6 hours.

Here is a sample timeline that captures all major moments starting at the ceremony.

3:45 Photography coverage begins
4:00 Ceremony
4:30 Cocktail hour with family photos, wedding party photos, and couples portraits
5:30 Intros, dances, speeches
6:00 Dinner
6:45 Golden hour photos
7:00 Cake cutting followed by open dancing
7:15 Photography coverage ends

As you can see, this timeline covers 3.5 hours of your wedding day. Everything is much more compact and there is very little room for things to change. This can be a great option if you are on a tighter budget.

How to Decide What Is Right for You and Your Partner

I work closely with couples to create a custom timeline that prioritizes what matters most to them. The goal is always the same: a relaxed experience and a complete story. I am there to capture your day the way you want it captured. If you do not want photos of getting ready or your dress hanging, that is completely okay. Maybe you want more reception photos. Or maybe you do not want photos of everyone on the dance floor and would rather focus on details and getting ready moments instead.

When in doubt, more coverage usually means more freedom, not more pressure.
