How to pick a wedding photographer

How to Choose a Wedding Photographer When Every Portfolio Looks the Same

Scrolling through wedding photographers can start to feel overwhelming fast. Beautiful couples. Perfect lighting. Gorgeous venues. And somehow, everything begins to blur together. This is why I am going to give you some pointers on how to choose a wedding photographer!

When portfolios all look similar, the difference is not just in the photos. It is in the experience.

  • Ask yourself how you want to feel on your wedding day. Calm. Comfortable. Supported. Free to be present. Your photographer is one of the people you will spend the most time with, and that matters.
  • Look beyond highlight reels. Ask to see full galleries. Pay attention to how couples interact with their photographer. Read reviews that talk about the experience, not just the images.
  • The right photographer will feel like a natural fit. Someone who understands your priorities, communicates clearly, and makes the entire process feel easy. I always tell my clients that feelings like you can be friend with your photographer outside of wedding planning is so important. Go with your gut. If something feels off, don’t book the vendor. In-person consultations and video meetings are a great way to get a sense of their personality.
  • Ask your photographer how they handle hurdles on a wedding day. Do you want someone who is going to remain calm and go with the flow or do you want someone who is going to take charge and tell family members when they need to be quite and ready for family photos? Maybe you want something in the middle.

Your photos should reflect how your day felt, not just how it looked. I hope these tips have helped you figure out how to choose a wedding photographer!
